Johnny and Dwight win Duo Category to Qualify for the IBC in Memphis
The Michael Vincent Band and the duo of Johnny Barbato and Dwight Everett are the new blues champions of the central Gulf Coast.
The acts were the winners of an International Blues Challenge regional qualifier held in Mobile. The qualifier, essentially a blues-themed battle of the bands, was presented by the Gulf Coast Blues Society on Saturday at the Blues Tavern.
The winners earned the chance to travel to Memphis early next year for the Blues Challenge main event. The annual contest is organized by the Blues Foundation.
Gulf Coast Blues Society founder Laura Vendetti posted on the society’s Facebook page that the Gulfport-based Michael Vincent Band had won the band category of the competition. Two Mobile-area groups came next, with Johnny No, last year’s winner, narrowly edging out the Formerly Known as first runner-up. (Vincent placed second in last year’s regional qualifier.)
Southwest Alabama songwriter Barbato, who won the solo/duo category last year, prevailed again this year with Everett, a new partner.
